Science of Compasses
A compass uses the positive attraction of a tiny magnet to the negatively charged end of the earth's magnetic field near the North Pole. This tiny magnet is attached to a nearly frictionless pivoting needle which swings freely and points to true magnetic north. Used on conjunction with a good map, it is an effective means of nagivation.
